"IF I HAD A DAUGHTER …"
  by K-JiO

IF I HAD A DAUGHTER …

If I had a daughter I’d want her disposition to be priceless
I would want her virtues to far outweigh her vices
I’d want the sweetness of her honeyed demeanor to overpower the bitterly malicious
I’d want her virtuous persona to outshine the malignantly vicious
I’d want all the signs of her development to be those of a good omen
I’d want her to pattern herself after a veritable, virtuous woman
Pleasant … personable … palatable … polite
I’d want the good in her to – in other people – convict and indict
I’d want her integrity and character to be none for worse
And for her to be as smooth as the sounding of a homophonic verse
That when read in ones hearing, in cadence and score
The ear of the one listening will always want to hear more
I’d want her to be innocent as long as she knows the world as such
And when her understanding is illuminated to new truths, she’ll tamper and touch -
The very essences of life itself as coiled confusion is uncurled
And as she grows with the more she knows, she comes to understand her world

If I had a daughter, she’d be a girl like no other
I’d be doubly blessed, because she’d be just like her mother
She’d be every bit the lady that she sees in her mother portrayal –
Of what a young lady should be in the truest context and convey-al
She’d be intelligent and well spoken of; her mindset mature and a little older
She’d be that girl you’ll see and say to yourself “She has a good head on her shoulders”
She’d be precocious and progressive with a sagacity that’s come full term
She’ll be more of a leader than a follower being fair, yet firm
She’d be her mothers’ child, handled with a mothers’ touch
She’d be the daughter I always wanted and I’d love her very much
And as such she’d be to me more precious to me than a cultured pearl
And for a certainty carry the title ‘Daddy’s Little Girl’
She’d be Gods gift to me, someone I’d love and protect with my life
She’d be a product of love, produced from the union of me and my wife
As I take my place as her father owning up to rationale and responsibility
Giving her a pattern -- and example -- of what a man should be

If I had a daughter, her mannerisms would be fitting
She’d be the complete opposite of ignorant and unwitting
She’d know how to talk to people, and with others, how to get along
Learning all of this from me and her mother, there’s no way she can go wrong
Her mouth won’t be the reason people are repelled from her presence
If anything, jealousy will be the reason people retreat from the essence -
Of what it is to be beautiful more so, on the inside rather than out
Placing values on the virtues that good natured-ness is all about
Her language would be sweet, and not sour or foul
Her speech won’t cause her --or others -- to wear an angry scowl
Her diction and tone will cause people to look up and take notice
And will cause angry spirits to grind to a still slowness
As is a biblical command for the older women to teach the young
My daughter will have learned from her mother to hold her tongue
And let certain things work themselves out, no matter how fast or slow
And for other things, she’d recognize when to let certain things go

Could you be the mother of the daughter I have yet to realize?
Do you have those qualities that I’d like my daughter to have, minus those I despise?
Do you qualify as the pattern and example I’d want my daughter to see?
Can you be the model of what I’d like my daughter to be?
I’m not asking for perfection or flawless proficiency
I’m just asking of my daughter not to have a severe character deficiency
And for what I’m asking for to be possible, like the summer breezes of calm
She has to see something to emulate in the woman that she’d call mom
Are you nurturing and patient enough help raise a daughter to be good?
To help not only raise a little girl, but to raise a young lady to woman-hood?
To help raise up our daughter in the way that she should go?
That when she is old, she will not depart from the values she’ll come to know?
I’m not asking if you can be my woman, that’s not what’s going to hold water
I’m asking if you have what it takes to be the mother of my daughter
If so, then we can be united into making that dream of mine come to fruition
If not, then we’re just two different people out on a different mission

the feeling of love just over took me while i was reading.....im a daddys girl so i can relate a little.. the ending struck me the most...most people dont realize that if the parents dont live up to their own expectations then how can you teach your kids to have the characteristics that you wish for them to have... I love the last stanza... you blew me away...
