Although I never accepted the invitation to be his wife
My older lover brought blessings and not strife into my life
Attracted by his confidence, not any flash or bling
I was naive, thinking that I knew everything
He taught me many lessons though
Some intentionally, others by his life choices

The lesson that I place at the top of the list:
If a man loves you or if he really cares
He will ensure that your needs are met
His desire is to make you feel special
To do this he will go out of his way
He will be a man of his word and do what he say

There was never a time when I had to ask my older lover for any thing
I was a hard worker and paid my own way
There were still things that he insisted to pay
He was the kind of man, who would get me out of bed
Early Saturday morning to replace my worn tires
I never even noticed when it was showing wires

Every time he came to visit
He always had a special gift in his hand
It wasn’t the big, but the little gifts that stood out
Through these gifts I realized that he was listening to my conversation
He knew what brought me happiness and what brought me gloom
He knew my favorite color, flower, candy and perfume

He was so observant of my body
He was also observant of my behavior
He knew when my monthly visitor would show
Even before the calendar said so
Instead of calling me out on my PMS behavior
He would show up with kit kat bars and foot massages to savor

He was such a loving and patient lover
Always putting me first
He knew when to be patient and gentle
When to make sweet love
However, He also knew when to follow
When I wanted to scream and holla

This experience lasted for only a short period of my life
But it helped shape my expectations
I became choosy about who was granted access into my life
So why did I allow this great man to slip away?
It’s very simple…we were at different stages in life
I was still figuring out who I was
He needed a mature and settled wife

The last time I heard from my older lover
I had been married for only a year
He just wanted to make sure that I was being treated right
He was not trying to interfere in my marriage
He said that it wouldn’t be fair
He just wanted me to know that he would always care
