My how I miss the days when Valentine’s Day wasn’t materialistic
Most people only equate love to a shape
That’s because love’s grown fake
It’s gotten so complicated since the days that we dated
At our little tea tables, reading each other fables, fairy tales
Imaginations running wild
I remember Valentine’s Day when I was a child
It wasn’t about glitter and gold, roses, and franklins
I just wanted to go to school and eat me some cake man
Handing out cards of your favorite cartoons,
Boys got Power Rangers, girls got Winnie The Pooh
Lollipops, Hershey kisses, and boxes of dots
From fun sized bags of mixed candies we bought
Heart shaped tarts with the words written in em
Like you’re super, you’re fine, and my favorite of all be mine
You took extra time, selected their card with care
Saying look how I printed your name so legibly there
Back when you had you’re very first crush
You’d wait, to see if your treats made em blush red
Like Kool-Aid
It didn’t matter if it was your teacher from 4th grade, classmate, or school aid
As long as you made
Them smile it was all worth while
You’d walk around strutting like a king or queen of the Nile
But that was just backdrop to what’s in the foreground
Your concentration shifts quick, yea you thinking bout moms now
We’d be fast get the biggest piece of construction paper
Determined that the gift you’d make would be far greater than the next kids
Saying, “ Well I know my mommy will like this, I’m a make her a pink heart and it’ll be this big.”
And no matter how sloppy your gift is your mom would say she loved you and give you a big kiss
Man I miss Valentine’s Day as a kid
Back when you didn’t have to spend fifty bucks for a nice gift
Hall Mark didn’t even exist
You’d fold a piece a paper, and write your own card like this…
Roses are red, Violets are blue
Sugar is sweet and so are you
Today I’m happy, I wish you are too
Because you love me and I love you
