I’m a poet ‘cause I claim to be
I’m a poet ‘cause I’m paid to be
I’m a poet ‘cause I’m ranked to be
I’m a poet ‘cause I can’t sell rap cds
I’m a poet ‘cause I know it
When I dream in iambic pentameter
And even my prayers are lyrical requests for miracles and
The scrolls of spoken word is God’s answer
Poetry is the only therapy that’s ever really worked for me
Exorcising pain and pleasure like volcanic ecstasy
The only place a line like that makes sense is in the world of poetry
My body language is poetry
I sleep in sonnets
Awake into this epic called life
Righting things by writing things that grow wings and fly
I listen to poems speak to me
They have their own identity
I’m a poet ‘cause the words choose me
They find me when they lose me
Unwind me and loose me in this poetry calling
Christen me poet
Not ‘cause I claim to be
‘cause I’m paid or ranked to be
Not because I failed at my real dreams but
Because I live and breathe poetry
