The Sweetest Slumber
Synchronized breathing
Together as one
My pulse beats as yours
As you dream of things to come
I breathe your breaths in an effort to be
The best, the last and the only
I struggle internally with thoughts of others
Your skin on their skin passion beneath your covers
I trust you with my heart and that’s more than most can bear
But I love you so this an effort to show I care
This is my sacrifice so you see me in my nakedness
Giving you my all; nothing more nothing less
These are the thoughts, the questions, the things I wonder
As I lie here and listen to the sweetest slumber
Honey can’t compare to the sweetness of the harmony
Inhale; exhale; the chorus of your melody
A hum so sweet couldn’t belong to such a voice
I try to hang up but it’s as if I have no choice
I’m locked in the rhythm and I can’t break free
Captured by your tone and it wont release me
But a prisoner of your bondage is what I long to be
I locked you down but baby you’re my key
You’re the man that I turn to whenever I’m in doubt
No one comes close and I couldn’t do without
The thought of you leaving severs my soul
Without you with me I can’t be whole
And your spirit could only fill a portion of the void that’s felt
As I’m writing this poem I begin to melt
A heavy sigh from your end of the line
I duplicate your voice with mine
In an effort to gently restore your consciousness
No luck, but I can live with this
I imagine your fantasies of the months ahead
I scan your memories for spoken promises and vows unsaid
I hear you smack your lips because your mouth has dried
Leads me to wonder if you believed me the night I lied
The night I told you I didn’t but I do
The worst lie I’ve ever told you
But you saw right past me you know me better I
A deep breath interrupts so mimic your sigh
Our breathing steadies and we begin to fall under
These are my memories of the sweetest slumber
