"The “N” Word"
  by AfricanBlack

In this modern day world
We seem to consume
This "N" word of hate
The slave word for doom

This word has been drenched
In red from our blood
It enslaved us like swine
Chain dragged through the mud

How fast we forget
Those lynch mobs and scars
The burnings and beatings
Those hot branding bars

We were hunted like prey
Then sold on the block
We were branded and bound
With a chain brace and lock

Our freedom was taken
Our humanity stole
We were just that "N" word
Without body or soul

In the belly of ships
We were chained to its base
We were stacked in tight columns
Lying deep in foul waste

The “N” word of hate
Was all they would see
We were no longer human
Just Beast who weren’t free

Black women were raped
Some men were castrated
Black children were sold
Our race was degraded

We were bred just like cattle
To make slaves out of slaves
We were forced into labor
And then forced into graves

With the crack of a whip
This word was yelled out
With each break in our neck
Their rope showed know doubt

This "N” word was use
To take guilt out of blame
Because it made us inhuman
To be killed with no shame

Yet after all of those years
Of torture and pain
The use of this word
Has weaken our brain

We throw it around
Like a word with no past
Though its history lives on
From the shadow it cast

It's now part of our language
In every sentence we say
It shows off our ignorance
In a sorry sad way

There's no other culture
And no other race
That would embrace such a slur
Or welcome disgrace

Yet we as Black people
Have done so for years
With our dignity lost
And no heart for lost tears

It's part of the reason
We will never excel
Or out-live that slum life
Of Ghetto-ish hell

We lost all respect
And we lost all our pride
We forgot all those tears
From those that have died

And yet we still use
This word on ourselves
When it means to be nothing
But a servant in hell

I wrote this poem because we as Black people need to realize as long as we embrace the "N" word or treat it like a term of endearment and it doesn't matter if it ends in a "ER" .. "GA" .. "CA" .. "RA" or "ah" because one was born from the other and the "GA" thru "ah" ending wouldn't exist if there wasn't the original first., Plus the world will still looked down upon us as ignorant and low class people, they will never show us the respect we deserve as equals when we can't even respect ourselves, and we will always be the butt of all their insulting jokes because to them this degrading "N" word makes us less than human. It's been over 400 hundred years and yet we still remain at the bottom of life's society... Our ancestors faced oppression, slavery, torture and death just to win respect, equality and a chance to live and prosper as others do throughout the world, So why do we continue to degrade ourselves by using a word that was meant to keep us down and was drenched in the blood of our Forefathers and Mothers?... Please check out sites such as the one I list below and let's show the world that we're equals to them and respectful Human Beings that came from Greatness, Not that low class "N" word that we've been labeled...

There are some other words I think we could also leave behind, to say the least. I love the passion you display here, this is a very intense and powerful display of your ability.

madd respect for this.. I'm constantly telling people not to say that word i really hate it and though most say ohh well your not black so chill i still feel like it offends everyone i mean i respect what African Americans went through to be held as human people and not objects and it feels like all the progress is being back dropped everytime i hear the word.. Even though i'm not African-American i agree completely that the word should be abolished no matter how it's being said or who is saying...

YOU KNOW IT! I couldn't agree more, and it's a shame that the word has been so downplayed that even some brothas will also allow their white mates or friends to use it freely. How shameful it is indeed. Self KNowledge, and Respect is so important yet so lacking today. I enjoyed this piece beyond words. 1Lv
